Goblet Squat
The Goblet Squat is the best squat variation for beginners to learn proper squat mechanics. Holding a single dumbbell or kettlebell at your chest acts as a counterweight, naturally pulling you into proper upright posture and depth. It teaches the fundamental squat pattern — knees out, chest up, hips back — in a way that is safe, self-correcting, and effective even with light weight. Advanced lifters use goblet squats as a warm-up and mobility drill.

-

-
Step 5
5. Descend until your elbows touch the inside of your knees (or go as deep as mobility allows)
-
Step 6
6. Drive through your heels and mid-foot to stand, squeezing glutes at the top
Pro Tips
- The goblet position naturally teaches proper form — if you lean too far forward, the weight will pull you further forward (negative feedback). Use your elbows to gently push your knees outward at the bottom — this opens the hips and allows greater depth. Keep the weight against your chest the entire time; letting it drift forward changes your center of gravity. Goblet squats are excellent for warm-up sets: 2-3 sets of 10-15 before barbell squats.
