Seated Shoulder Press Machine

Target Muscle: Shoulders
Equipment: Shoulder Press
Level: Beginner

The Seated Shoulder Press Machine delivers targeted deltoid development with exceptional shoulder joint safety. The converging press path follows the natural arc of shoulder abduction, reducing the risk of impingement that can occur with barbell overhead pressing. Independent arm action prevents strength imbalances, while the low 5 lb starting resistance makes this machine accessible for beginners and rehabilitation patients. The multi-grip positions allow you to vary deltoid head emphasis.

Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. Step 1

    1. Adjust the seat height so the handles are roughly level with your chin

  2. Step 2

    2. Select weight — start lighter than you think; shoulder isolation is humbling

  3. Step 3

    3. Sit tall with your back against the pad and grip the handles (try neutral grip first)

  4. Step 4

    4. Press overhead along the converging path until arms are extended but not locked

  5. Step 5

    5. Lower under control until your elbows are at about chin level — do not go deeper as this can stress the shoulder capsule

  6. Step 6

    6. Keep your core braced and avoid arching your lower back during the press

Pro Tips

  • Range of motion for shoulder press should stop at chin/ear level at the bottom — going lower forces the shoulder into extreme external rotation and risks impingement. If you feel sharp pain at the top of the movement (possible impingement), try the neutral grip position. Do not use your legs or momentum to start the press — this is a strict movement.
