Dumbbell Lateral Raise

Target Muscle: Shoulders
Level: Beginner

The Dumbbell Lateral Raise is the single most effective exercise for building shoulder width. It isolates the medial deltoid head, which sits on the side of the shoulder and is responsible for the capped, wide-shouldered look. Dumbbells allow each arm to work through its natural arc independently, and the freedom of movement reduces shoulder impingement risk compared to machines.

Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. Step 1

    1. Stand with feet shoulder-width apart, holding a light dumbbell in each hand at your sides

  2. Step 2

    2. Keep a slight bend in your elbows — maintain this fixed angle throughout

  3. Step 3

    3. Lean forward very slightly (about 5-10°) to align the medial delt fibers with the line of pull

  4. Step 4

    4. Raise the dumbbells out to your sides by leading with your elbows — not your hands

  5. Step 5

    5. Stop when your arms are parallel to the floor (shoulder height) — going higher risks shoulder impingement

  6. Step 6

    6. Lower under control (2-3 seconds) — the eccentric phase is crucial for delt growth

Pro Tips

  • Use lighter weight than you think — the lateral raise is an isolation movement, and momentum defeats its purpose. Lead with your elbows, imagining you are pouring water from a pitcher at the top. Do not shrug your shoulders up (traps) — keep them depressed. At the top, your pinky fingers should be slightly higher than your thumbs for optimal medial delt engagement.
