Leg Extension
The Leg Extension is the ultimate quadriceps isolation exercise. By removing all hip and core involvement, it strips leg training down to pure knee extension — making it unmatched for targeting the four quadriceps muscles (rectus femoris, vastus lateralis, vastus medialis, vastus intermedius). The variable resistance cam on quality machines (like our MF-LE100) matches the quad strength curve — heavier resistance mid-range where you are strongest, reduced resistance at end ranges to protect the knees. This makes leg extensions both safe and highly effective for hypertrophy, pre-exhaustion before squats, or finishing leg day.

Step-by-Step Instructions
-
Step 1
1. Adjust the back pad so your knees align with the machine's pivot point (the axis of rotation)
-
Step 2
2. Adjust the tibia pad so it rests comfortably against your lower shins — not on your ankles or high on your shins
-
Step 3
3. Select weight and grip the side handles for stability
-
Step 4
4. Extend your legs smoothly until they are straight — hold the peak contraction for 1-2 seconds
-
Step 5
5. Lower under control over 2-3 seconds — do not let the weight stack drop
-
Step 6
6. Stop just before the weight touches the stack to keep constant tension on the quads
Pro Tips
- Alignment is everything — the pivot point of the machine must match your knee joint axis. If it does not, you will feel discomfort. Point your toes (plantarflexion) to emphasize the rectus femoris; flex your toes (dorsiflexion) to emphasize the vastus muscles. Do not use momentum or swing — each rep should be smooth and controlled. For pre-exhaustion, perform 3 sets of leg extensions immediately before squats or leg press.
