Ab Crunch Machine
The Ab Crunch Machine is the most effective way to progressively overload the rectus abdominis. Unlike bodyweight crunches where adding resistance is awkward, the selectorized stack allows precise, progressive weight increases — the same principle that builds every other muscle. The pre-stretch design positions your abs under tension at the start, and the cam profile provides consistent resistance throughout the crunch.

Step-by-Step Instructions
-
Step 1
1. Adjust the seat height so the chest pad sits comfortably against your upper chest
-
Step 2
2. Select weight — start light; ab isolation responds well to moderate weight with high reps
-
Step 3
3. Grip the handles and position your back against the padded support
-
Step 4
4. Initiate the crunch by curling your ribcage toward your pelvis — focus on spinal flexion, not hip flexion
-
Step 5
5. Crunch until your abs are fully contracted — hold for 1-2 seconds
-
Step 6
6. Return under control to the pre-stretch position without letting the weight touch the stack
Pro Tips
- The movement is spinal flexion (curling your upper body forward), NOT hip flexion (bending at the waist). Focus on bringing your ribcage toward your pelvis. Exhale forcefully during the crunch for maximum contraction. Control the eccentric — the return phase should be slower than the crunch (2 seconds down). Train abs 3-4 times per week with moderate weight; treat them like any other muscle for growth.
