Elliptical Interval Training

Target Muscle: Full Body
Equipment: Ellipticals
Level: Beginner

Elliptical Interval Training transforms steady-state cardio into a powerful fat-burning and cardiovascular conditioning workout. By alternating between high-intensity work intervals and lower-intensity recovery periods, you maximize calorie burn both during and after the workout (EPOC — excess post-exercise oxygen consumption). The elliptical’s low-impact nature makes it ideal for interval training because you can push hard without the joint stress of sprinting.

Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. Step 1

    1. Step onto the elliptical and select 'Manual' or 'Interval' mode on the console

  2. Step 2

    2. Start with a 3-minute warm-up at resistance level 3-5 and moderate pace (RPE 4/10)

  3. Step 3

    3. Work interval: Increase resistance to 8-12 and pedal at maximum sustainable speed for 30-60 seconds (RPE 8-9/10)

  4. Step 4

    4. Recovery interval: Reduce resistance to 3-4 and pedal at an easy pace for 60-90 seconds (RPE 4/10)

  5. Step 5

    5. Repeat the work/recovery cycle for 15-25 minutes (8-12 intervals)

  6. Step 6

    6. Cool down for 3-5 minutes at easy resistance until heart rate returns near resting

Pro Tips

  • Use the moving handles — engaging your upper body significantly increases calorie burn. Focus on maintaining the same RPM during work intervals as during warm-up; increase resistance, not speed, to add intensity. 30 seconds work / 90 seconds recovery is a great starting ratio. Progress by extending work intervals (up to 2 minutes) and shortening recovery (down to 60 seconds).
