Smith Machine Lunge
The Smith Machine Lunge is a unilateral leg exercise that builds quadriceps, glute, and stabilizer muscle strength while correcting left-to-right imbalances. Using the Smith machine for lunges provides balance assistance so you can focus on loading the working leg without worrying about tipping over — especially valuable when using heavy weights. This exercise also improves hip flexor mobility and challenges your core stability more than bilateral exercises like squats.

Step-by-Step Instructions
-
Step 1
1. Set the bar at shoulder height and load moderate weight (start lighter than squats)
-
Step 2
2. Unrack the bar across your upper back and take one step forward with your dominant leg
-
Step 3
3. Position your front foot so that when you descend, your front knee stays directly above your ankle (not pushed forward past your toes)
-
Step 4
4. Lower your back knee toward the floor until it hovers about 1-2 inches above the ground
-
Step 5
5. Drive through your front heel to return to the starting position
-
Step 6
6. Complete all reps on one leg before switching, or alternate legs each rep
Pro Tips
- Your front foot should be far enough forward that your shin stays nearly vertical at the bottom — if your knee travels past your toes, step further forward. Keep your torso upright; leaning forward transfers load to the lower back. The back knee should come close to the floor but not touch — maintain tension in the working leg throughout.
