Dumbbell Shoulder Press
The Dumbbell Shoulder Press allows each arm to move independently through its own natural arc, making it more shoulder-friendly than the barbell version. Dumbbells also allow a greater range of motion — you can lower the weights lower than a barbell (which stops at your chin) and press them closer together at the top for better deltoid contraction. The stabilization demands also engage the rotator cuff and surrounding muscles for healthier shoulders.

Step-by-Step Instructions
-
Step 1
1. Sit on an adjustable bench set to 80-85° (near-vertical) with back support
-
Step 2
2. Clean the dumbbells to shoulder height or have a partner hand them to you
-
Step 3
3. Start with dumbbells at shoulder level, palms facing forward, elbows slightly in front of your body
-
Step 4
4. Press both dumbbells overhead in a slight arc — they should nearly touch at the top
-
Step 5
5. Do not lock your elbows completely at the top; keep tension on the delts
-
Step 6
6. Lower under control until the dumbbells are at ear/shoulder level
Pro Tips
- Do not let the dumbbells drift too far forward or backward — they should travel in a straight line from shoulder to overhead. Keep your back pressed against the bench — avoid excessive arching. For rear delt emphasis, angle your palms slightly inward (neutral grip). If you feel shoulder pain at the bottom, reduce the range of motion — stop at ear level rather than going all the way down.
